Australia-wide medicine directory · reviewed 22 July 2026

Undergraduate medicine pathways in Australia, state by state.

Compare direct degrees, provisional offers, rural partnerships and structured internal routes without mistaking an ordinary biomedical degree for a reserved medicine place.

Read this first

Understand the four route types before comparing universities.

01

Direct medical degree

The Year 12 offer admits the student to the medical program itself.

02

Provisional or assured

A medicine place is reserved, but bachelor completion, GPA or other progression conditions still apply.

03

Internal or feeder

The first degree creates a later selection opportunity. It is not automatically a medicine offer.

04

Transition warning

Old and new official pages conflict, or the next intake is not confirmed. Written verification is essential.

A minimum ATAR is not an offer cut-off. It may only make an applicant eligible to be ranked. UCAT, interview, rurality, subquota, applicant strength and available places can move the real competitive position each year.

Admissions language

A parent-friendly glossary.

ATAR / selection rank
ATAR is the school-leaving rank. A selection rank may include permitted adjustments. A minimum makes a student eligible; it is not necessarily the offer cut-off.
UCAT / ISAT / GAMSAT
Admissions tests used for different applicant groups. UCAT ANZ is common for school leavers, ISAT is often international, and GAMSAT is generally graduate entry.
MMI
Multiple Mini Interview: a circuit of short interview stations assessing communication, judgement, motivation and related qualities.
WAM / GPA
University performance measures used for progression or later selection. Each university calculates and applies them differently.
CSP / BMP
A Commonwealth Supported Place reduces tuition cost. A Bonded Medical Program place includes a later return-of-service obligation.
UAC / VTAC / QTAC / SATAC / TISC
The state admissions centres used to lodge course preferences. Some medicine programs also require a separate university form.
MM2-M7
The Modified Monash rurality categories used by some universities to define rural background, placement or pathway eligibility.

Domestic and international school leavers. Domestic eligibility includes Australian and New Zealand citizens, permanent residents and humanitarian visa holders.
01

Academic position

Published minimum selection rank: 96 general, 91 Rural Entry and 91 Gateway. For context only, UNSW's observed 2026 lowest ATARs were 99.75 local, 91.05 rural and 94.25 Gateway; those figures are not future cut-offs.

02

Aptitude test

Domestic applicants: UCAT ANZ, with a published minimum 50th percentile for general/Gateway and 40th percentile for Rural Entry. International applicants: UCAT at or above the 50th percentile or ISAT 165+.

03

Interview

UNSW medicine interview after academic and aptitude-test ranking.

04

Prerequisites

No formal school-subject prerequisite is published. English is assumed or recommended and Chemistry is recommended preparation.

05

Application

UAC code 428000 plus the UNSW Medicine Application Portal form. Domestic applications close 30 September 2026. International Australian Year 12/IB applicants use UAC; other international qualifications apply direct, with a published 30 November deadline.

06

Progression

Direct integrated program. An optional Arts transfer after admission can add one or two years and is not a separate Year 12 medicine offer.

Places and competition

UNSW had not published one total 2027 quota on the pages reviewed. Gateway advertises about 20 offers; rural and bonded allocations operate separately.

Rural, Indigenous and other access

Rural Entry, Gateway and Indigenous Entry schemes apply. UCAT is not required for Indigenous Entry.

02Direct medical degree

Western Sydney University + Charles Sturt University

Bachelor of Clinical Science (Medicine) / Doctor of Medicine
5 years full-timeUCAT / ISAT

A joint five-year medical program with separate campus preferences and strong Greater Western Sydney, rural and Indigenous selection streams.

Location
Campbelltown (WSU) and Orange (Charles Sturt)
Who can apply
Domestic school leavers and other eligible domestic applicants at both sites. WSU also confirms an international route at Campbelltown; do not assume an international Orange route without written confirmation.
01

Academic position

Published domestic minimums: 95.5 general, 93.5 Greater Western Sydney and 91.5 Rural Entry. WSU's international minimum is an ATAR-equivalent 93.5. These are eligibility thresholds, not offer cut-offs.

02

Aptitude test

Domestic applicants sit the current-year UCAT ANZ; the competitive threshold is set from the cohort and is not pre-published. WSU international applicants use ISAT.

03

Interview

Online Multiple Mini Interview, scheduled for late November in the current cycle.

04

Prerequisites

No specific school subject prerequisite is stated on the current admission pages. English proficiency and later clinical-placement compliance apply.

05

Application

UAC 725505 for WSU Campbelltown and 214478 for Charles Sturt Orange. WSU closes 30 September 2026; Charles Sturt medicine preferences and rural form close 25 September. WSU international applicants apply direct unless using an Australian HSC, IB or NCEA route through UAC International.

06

Progression

Direct integrated five-year course; no separate bachelor GPA gate before the MD component is advertised.

Places and competition

WSU publishes at least 20 international Year 1 places. A current total domestic quota was not published on the pages reviewed.

Rural, Indigenous and other access

Greater Western Sydney residence, Rural Entry and Indigenous pathways operate. The Indigenous process is UCAT-exempt and uses a structured panel assessment.

03Direct medical degree

University of Newcastle + University of New England

Bachelor of Medical Science + Doctor of Medicine (Joint Medical Program)
5 years full-timeUCAT

A jointly delivered five-year course that combines UCAT screening with a personal-qualities assessment and medical selection assessment.

Location
Newcastle, Central Coast / Gosford and Armidale
Who can apply
Domestic applicants across all three sites. The international route is through Newcastle at Newcastle or Central Coast, not UNE Armidale.
01

Academic position

Minimum ATAR 94.30; published Rural Bonus school-leaver minimum 85. Academic minimums establish eligibility and do not guarantee assessment or admission.

02

Aptitude test

Domestic and international applicants sit UCAT ANZ. For 2027, the aggregate is VR, DM and QR and excludes SJT; cohort cut-offs are set after applications close.

03

Interview

Medical Selection Assessment stations plus an online Personal Qualities Assessment. Domestic assessment is in person; international MSA is conducted by Zoom.

04

Prerequisites

No school-subject prerequisites are published.

05

Application

UAC 785000 plus the direct JMP application and campus preference. The direct JMP form closes 30 September 2026. UAC medicine preference timing differs for Indigenous and other applicants; verify the live UAC medicine timetable. The international direct deadline is 4 September.

06

Progression

Direct integrated five-year degree. Campus and rural streams affect delivery and selection rather than creating a later graduate application.

Places and competition

The current JMP application page publishes 170 places across Newcastle and UNE and more than 3,000 applicants each year. Miroma Bunbilla publishes up to 17 Indigenous places.

Rural, Indigenous and other access

Rural and Remote Admissions, Rural Bonus, Regional Excellence, Miroma Bunbilla Indigenous, equity and other regional pathways have distinct evidence and ranking rules.

04Provisional or assured pathway

The University of Sydney

Bachelor of Arts / Doctor of Medicine or Bachelor of Science / Doctor of Medicine
7 years · 3-year bachelor + 4-year MDNo aptitude test

A very small double-degree cohort selected on exceptional school results and an assessment day rather than UCAT.

Location
Camperdown / Darlington and Sydney clinical schools
Who can apply
Domestic and international school leavers applying for their first available intake after school, before commencing tertiary study.
01

Academic position

ATAR 99.95 or published equivalent, including IB 45, is the standard threshold and does not guarantee selection. Access schemes have specific adjusted settings.

02

Aptitude test

No UCAT, GAMSAT or ISAT for the double-degree application.

03

Interview

Assessment Day includes a group or panel discussion and a written assessment. Sydney and UAC currently describe the delivery mode inconsistently, so applicants should confirm whether their session is online or in person.

04

Prerequisites

No school-subject prerequisite is published for admission. Some bachelor courses have assumed knowledge, including Biology in relevant science study.

05

Application

UAC 513715 for Arts/MD and 513720 for Science/MD. Domestic assessment and offer rounds run in December and January after ATAR release. International applicants generally apply direct by 31 October, with UAC used for specified Australian Year 12 or IB circumstances.

06

Progression

Complete the bachelor in three years, complete the required foundations study and maintain annual average mark of at least 65 before commencing the MD. Approved honours can extend the bachelor to four years.

Places and competition

Approximately 30 domestic and 10 international places in total across both double degrees.

Rural, Indigenous and other access

Gadigal, MySydney and regional or remote settings apply under specific rules; ordinary EAS adjustment is not available to the double-degree medicine courses.

05International assured pathway

Macquarie University

Location
North Ryde and Macquarie clinical partners
Who can apply
International high-school graduates only. Domestic applicants do not have access to this packaged offer.
01

Academic position

Minimum ATAR-equivalent 95, with competitive capped selection. English requires IELTS 7.0 in every band or the published equivalent.

02

Aptitude test

No UCAT or ISAT is published for selection to this specific international package.

03

Interview

Online four-station Multiple Mini Interview.

04

Prerequisites

Mathematics and Chemistry are assumed knowledge; Macquarie recommends bridging study where needed.

05

Application

Apply through Macquarie International Admissions. For the current 2027 cycle, applications opened 22 April and close 1 October 2026, with interviews from June to November.

06

Progression

Automatic MD progression requires an unconditional package offer, overall Bachelor of Clinical Science WAM at least 70 and professional-practice-unit WAM at least 70.

Places and competition

The package has a set quota, but Macquarie does not publish the number on the pathway page.

Rural, Indigenous and other access

Do not confuse the package with the domestic Bachelor of Clinical Science, which only provides later graduate-application advantages and no reserved MD place.

Former or unconfirmed routes

Bachelor of Biomedical Science + Doctor of Medicine (former Assured Pathway)Check latest status
Formerly 7-8 yearsFormer: UCAT / ISAT

Check before applying: Not confirmed for 2027 and appears discontinued for new entry. Treat as a teach-out warning.

Included to resolve conflicting public information, not as a recommended 2027 application. Applicants should obtain written confirmation from Notre Dame before relying on it.

Location
Sydney
Who can apply
The older marketing page describes an international school-leaver pathway, but current formal rules mark the assured course as discontinued and in teach-out.
01

Academic position

The older page states ATAR 92 or equivalent; current 2027 material does not confirm a new assured intake.

02

Aptitude test

The older page states UCAT ANZ or ISAT for interview ranking.

03

Interview

The older pathway required a successful interview.

04

Prerequisites

The older page listed no school-subject prerequisites and recommended Science and Mathematics.

05

Application

Do not lodge plans around this route until Notre Dame confirms whether any 2027 entry exists. The formal Bachelor rules record discontinuation and teach-out from 20 April 2026.

06

Progression

The older offer required GPA 2.5 each semester; this is not evidence of a new 2027 intake.

Places and competition

No confirmed 2027 commencing quota.

Rural, Indigenous and other access

Notre Dame's domestic Biomedical Science Priority Pathway is a later competitive MD application and the 2027 guide says it is under review; it is not an assured Year 12 medicine place.

ACT

1 current pathway

Australian Capital Territory

No current school-leaver medical degree. ANU Medicine is a graduate-entry program after a bachelor degree.

Current pathways and structured feeders

01Structured internal pathway

Australian National University

ANU Health Science students can compete for a defined pool of conditional medicine offers without GAMSAT after substantial ANU study.

Location
Canberra and ANU clinical schools
Who can apply
Domestic and international Bachelor of Health Science students. This is a reserved internal selection route, not a guaranteed Year 12 medicine offer.
01

Academic position

Bachelor entry has a minimum selection rank 90 or IB 35 plus a compulsory supplementary form. Internal applicants need at least WAM 75 after the required ANU study to be ranked.

02

Aptitude test

No UCAT at school-leaver entry and no GAMSAT for the named internal Health Science pathway.

03

Interview

Internal medicine selection interview, with a minimum published pass mark of 60.

04

Prerequisites

No formal school subject prerequisite is published for Health Science, but Chemistry is strongly recommended and required pre-medical study must be completed in the bachelor.

05

Application

UAC 138302 for the Bachelor of Health Science plus the supplementary form. The direct Year 12 early-offer deadline for 2027 was 8 May 2026; other applicants should verify the current UAC and form timing. Internal medicine applications run 31 March-30 July after sufficient ANU study.

06

Progression

After at least 72 ANU units and while on track for 96 units plus required courses, ranking is 40% WAM, 40% interview and 20% written responses. A conditional offer still requires completion of the bachelor requirements.

Places and competition

Up to 40 domestic conditional MChD offers per year, with international and Indigenous candidates considered in addition.

Rural, Indigenous and other access

About 30% of the internal domestic pool is preferentially allocated to rural-background applicants; ANU also publishes Indigenous and bonded categories.

04

Prerequisites

VCE English 30, or EAL 35, and Chemistry 30, or approved equivalents.

05

Application

Domestic applicants apply through VTAC from 3 August to 28 September 2026. Standard code 2800311231; verify Extended Rural Cohort and bonded codes in live VTAC because Monash pages conflict. International direct applications closed 30 June for the main round; Australian Year 12/IB/NCEA international applicants use VTAC by 28 September.

06

Progression

Direct integrated five-year course. Extended Rural Cohort students spend the first two years at Clayton and most of the final three in rural or regional Victoria.

Places and competition

Approximately 234 domestic places; about 28.5% bonded, 30 Extended Rural Cohort, and at least 27% of domestic intake reserved for the Dean's Rural List.

Rural, Indigenous and other access

Dean's Rural List and Extended Rural Cohort apply rural-background rules. Indigenous Entry is UCAT-exempt and uses a panel interview rather than the standard MMI.

02

Aptitude test

No UCAT or ISAT appears in the official school-leaver selection criteria.

03

Interview

Joint La Trobe / Melbourne rural Multiple Mini Interview in December or January. An Aspire conditional offer guarantees an interview only, not admission.

04

Prerequisites

VCE English 25 or EAL 30, or equivalent. Rurality evidence is mandatory.

05

Application

Apply through VTAC, or UAC where the NSW process applies, and submit La Trobe's rurality evidence form. The form reopens in August 2026; verify the new course code and closing date rather than reusing 2026 details.

06

Progression

Maintain WAM at least 70 and demonstrate continued commitment to country living to progress to the University of Melbourne Rural MD bonded place.

Places and competition

15 domestic rural or regional places.

Rural, Indigenous and other access

Every place is a rural pipeline and a Bonded Medical Place; applicants must understand the later return-of-service obligation.

03Competitive feeder pathway

Federation University + Monash University

Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Gippsland Partnership Program), then competitive Monash graduate-entry medicine
7 years if later selected · 3-year bachelor + 4-year medicineNo aptitude test

Who can apply
Gippsland-origin applicants meeting the published rural residence footprint. The reserved graduate route is documented for domestic applicants.
01

Academic position

Federation prerequisites are score 20 in any Mathematics or Science and 20 in any English; the course prefers applicants around ATAR 85+. A WAM of at least 70 is needed to become eligible for the later Monash application.

02

Aptitude test

No UCAT or ISAT at school-leaver entry. GAMSAT is not required for this named Monash partner application.

03

Interview

Later Monash graduate-medicine MMI. Selection for that stage is WAM 40% and MMI 60%.

04

Prerequisites

VCE score 20 in any Mathematics or Science and 20 in any English, or equivalent, plus the Gippsland rural residence requirements.

05

Application

VTAC 3700711751 or Federation direct application for course SB5; next intake begins 1 March 2027. Students later apply separately to Monash graduate medicine in the published partner window.

06

Progression

WAM 70 creates eligibility to compete for Monash, not automatic progression. Rural eligibility and MMI still apply.

Places and competition

Monash publishes five graduate-medicine places annually for the partnership.

Rural, Indigenous and other access

Applicants need five consecutive or ten cumulative years in the defined Gippsland MM2-7 footprint.

Former or unconfirmed routes

04Transitional pathway

The University of Melbourne

Melbourne bachelor degree + Doctor of Medicine guaranteeCheck latest status
Historically 7 years · 3-year bachelor + 4-year MD2027 criteria pending

Check before applying: 2027 school-leaver conditions are pending. Do not rely on the old guarantee.

Included to stop families applying under obsolete assumptions. Melbourne's old school-leaver guarantee cannot yet be presented as a confirmed 2027 medicine pathway.

Location
Parkville and Melbourne clinical schools
Who can apply
The published MD guarantee currently applies to students who commenced undergraduate study before January 2027. Conditions for students starting a bachelor in 2027 are still to be confirmed.
01

Academic position

Under the pre-2027 rule, ATAR 99.00-99.85, bachelor WAM 75+ and a satisfactory MMI supported a guaranteed full-fee MD place. Chancellor's Scholarship rules are separate and the MD-specific 2027 conditions remain unpublished.

02

Aptitude test

No GAMSAT under the historical guarantee. Do not assume that exemption for a 2027 starter until Melbourne publishes the new terms.

03

Interview

A satisfactory MMI is required under the historical guarantee.

04

Prerequisites

Prerequisites depend on the chosen bachelor. The later MD has its own current eligibility and clinical requirements.

05

Application

Year 12 applicants apply to the bachelor through VTAC; the later historical guaranteed-MD application was direct through Melbourne's course portal. Wait for the promised 2027 pathway update before relying on this sequence.

06

Progression

Historical rule: complete the eligible Melbourne bachelor immediately after Year 12 and maintain WAM 75+. New-starter conditions are not confirmed.

Places and competition

No confirmed 2027 commencing school-leaver guarantee quota.

Rural, Indigenous and other access

Chancellor's Scholarship and Indigenous thresholds are not automatically interchangeable with the yet-to-be-published 2027 MD guarantee conditions.

QLD

8 current pathways

Queensland

Queensland has direct, provisional, regional and private school-leaver medicine pathways.

Current pathways and structured feeders

01Direct medical degree

Gold Coast (Robina / Varsity Lakes)
Who can apply
Domestic applicants, including eligible school leavers and tertiary applicants. Standard direct entry is not available to applicants who require an international student visa.
01

Academic position

Bond's recent guide says an undergraduate applicant generally needed ATAR 96+ or IB 38+ to be competitive for psychometric selection. That is a recent guide, not a guaranteed cut-off.

02

Aptitude test

No UCAT or GAMSAT for standard entry. Shortlisted applicants pay for and complete Bond's online psychometric assessment.

03

Interview

Online medicine interview after the psychometric stage; Bond advises allowing about two hours for the process.

04

Prerequisites

English is required. Check Bond's current subject-equivalence table for the applicant's qualification.

05

Application

QTAC code 020712. For 2027, applications open 5 January and close 19 January 2027; psychometric testing runs 12-17 February, interviews 9-12 March and first offers are scheduled for 23 March.

06

Progression

Students complete the Bachelor of Medical Studies and then transition to the MD. Direct-entry students must complete both awards to qualify for provisional registration.

Places and competition

Bond publishes two annual commencements, in May and September. Its current official pages conflict: the entry page says up to 180 domestic places a year, while the FAQ says up to 200. Confirm the intended intake directly.

Rural, Indigenous and other access

Bond aims for 40% of interview invitations to go to applicants from Queensland and the Tweed community. A separate First Nations pathway and Bond-only lateral entry routes also operate.

02Direct medical degree

02

Aptitude test

No UCAT and no GAMSAT. JCU explicitly says neither test gives an advantage.

03

Interview

Shortlisted applicants complete an online panel interview through Kira. For 2027, rounds are scheduled for late November 2026 and early January 2027.

04

Prerequisites

English, Mathematical Methods and Chemistry at Queensland Units 3 and 4 grade C or equivalent. Biology is recommended rather than required.

Minimum adjusted ATAR 95. UniSQ notes that this was also the lowest adjusted offer rank for Trimester 1, 2025, but availability and applicant strength vary each year.

02

Aptitude test

UCAT ANZ is compulsory. The aggregate score needed for interview depends on the applicant pool and available places.

03

Interview

Multiple Mini Interview for applicants shortlisted by UCAT and eligibility.

04

Prerequisites

English plus General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics at Queensland Units 3 and 4 grade C. Biology, Chemistry or Physics is recommended.

06

Progression

Complete the bachelor within three years and achieve at least GPA 5.0/7 for direct entry to the UQ MD in Toowoomba.

Places and competition

Quota-limited; meeting ATAR, UCAT and interview requirements does not guarantee an offer.

Rural, Indigenous and other access

Rural access adjustments, a First Nations pathway and Bonded Medical Program places are available under separate rules.

07Provisional or assured pathway

Griffith University

Bachelor of Medical Science + Doctor of Medicine
6 years · accelerated 2-year bachelor + 4-year MDUCAT optional

01

Academic position

Extremely high academic ranking. Griffith's 2026 indicators were adjusted ATAR 99.90 at Gold Coast and 99.95 at Nathan; not every Gold Coast applicant at 99.90 received an offer.

02

Aptitude test

UCAT is optional and used only as a second-order differentiator within an ATAR band. A published 2026 Gold Coast example used UCAT 2240 within the relevant band.

03

Interview

Common parent questions

What to know before building a preference list.

Which universities offer medicine after Year 12?

The direct-degree cards identify offers into medicine itself. Provisional, assured, internal and feeder cards begin with another degree and have separate progression or selection rules.

Which pathways do not require UCAT?

The Sydney double degree, JCU, Bond, selected internal or rural pathways and the new CDU program currently publish non-UCAT processes. Bond still uses a paid psychometric assessment. Always recheck the intended intake.

What ATAR is needed for medicine?

There is no national cut-off. Published minimums, adjusted selection ranks and actual offer ranks are different. Read the academic, test, interview and access-scheme sections together.

Does biomedical science guarantee medicine?

Usually not. A generic biomedical science degree is preparation, not a reserved medical place. Only rely on a guarantee when the official course names the progression conditions and applicant category.
