Read like a detective

A reliable method

  1. Underline the key idea in the question.
  2. Scan for that idea or a close synonym.
  3. Read the complete sentence before choosing.

Mini example

Text: 'The ferry left after the fog lifted.' Question: Why was the ferry delayed?

Reveal model answer

The ferry waited for the fog to lift.

Watch for: Choosing an option that repeats a word from the text but changes what happened.

Lesson 2Build an inference from cluesInference

A reliable method

  1. Collect two or more relevant clues.
  2. Ask what must or most likely follows.
  3. Reject ideas that are possible but not supported.

Mini example

Luca puts his wet umbrella by the door and wipes his glasses. What is likely true outside?

Reveal model answer

It is probably raining. Both clues support that inference.

Watch for: Adding a dramatic detail that the text never suggests.

Lesson 3State the main idea at the right sizeMain idea and synthesis

A reliable method

  1. Give each paragraph a short label.
  2. Notice the idea repeated or developed across them.
  3. Choose a summary broad enough for the whole text but no broader.

Mini example

Three paragraphs describe a creek clean-up, the wildlife returning and the need for continued care.

Reveal model answer

Community care has helped the creek recover, but the work must continue.

Watch for: Selecting a memorable detail from one paragraph as the whole main idea.

Lesson 4Judge evidence carefullyEvaluating evidence

A reliable method

  1. Separate an observation from a claimed cause.
  2. Look for other explanations or missing comparison groups.
  3. Use cautious words such as suggests when proof is incomplete.

Mini example

A class uses new pencils and writes faster that day. Did the pencils cause the improvement?

Reveal model answer

Not necessarily. Practice, task difficulty or excitement could also affect speed.

Watch for: Treating two events that happen together as proof that one caused the other.

  1. Shorten each clue into symbols or arrows.
  2. Combine clues that share an item.
  3. Check every option against every rule.

Mini example

Kai is before Noor. Noor is before Eli.

The fixed chain is Kai → Noor → Eli.

Watch for: Stopping after an option passes only the first condition.

Lesson 2Find the missing bridge in an argumentIdentifying assumptions

A reliable method

  1. Write the evidence in a few words.
  2. Write the conclusion separately.
  3. Ask what must be accepted to move from one to the other.

Mini example

Five friends like a new game, so everyone at school will like it.

The argument assumes five friends represent everyone at school.

Watch for: Choosing an interesting fact that is not required by the argument.

Lesson 3Test a deduction with groupsLogical deduction

A reliable method

  1. Draw group circles or use a simple table.
  2. Apply words such as all, some and no exactly.
  3. Choose only what must follow, not what might follow.

Mini example

All zibs are blue. Taro is a zib.

Reveal model answer

Taro must be blue. We cannot conclude that every blue thing is a zib.

Watch for: Reversing an all statement.

Lesson 4Split a complex patternPattern recognition

A reliable method

  1. Write the differences between number terms.
  2. For mixed pairs, solve each part separately.
  3. Check the rule against every transition before continuing it.

Mini example

2, 5, 9, 14, … has differences +3, +4, +5.

Reveal model answer

The next difference is +6, so the next term is 20.

Watch for: Using a rule that explains only the final two terms.

Mathematical Reasoning

Lesson 1Find a fraction of a quantityFractions

A reliable method

  1. Use the denominator to divide into equal groups.
  2. Use the numerator to count the needed groups.
  3. Check that a proper fraction gives less than the whole.

Mini example

Find 3/5 of 35.

Reveal model answer

35 ÷ 5 = 7, then 7 × 3 = 21.

Watch for: Dividing by the numerator instead of the denominator.

Lesson 2Use a unit rateRates

A reliable method

  1. Find the amount for one unit.
  2. Multiply that unit rate by the new number of units.
  3. Include the correct measurement unit.

Mini example

Four notebooks cost $12. At the same rate, what do seven cost?

Reveal model answer

$12 ÷ 4 = $3 each; 7 × $3 = $21.

Watch for: Adding the same number to both quantities instead of scaling.

Lesson 3Read percentage changes in orderPercentages

A reliable method

  1. Find the percentage of the current amount.
  2. Complete the increase or decrease.
  3. Use the new amount as the base for the next change.

Mini example

$50 rises by 10%, then the new price falls by 10%.

Reveal model answer

$50 → $55 → $49.50. Equal percentages do not usually cancel because their bases differ.

Watch for: Adding and subtracting percentage numbers without checking their bases.

Lesson 4Work backwards from an averageData reasoning

A reliable method

  1. Multiply the average by the number of values to find the total.
  2. Add the known values.
  3. Subtract to find the missing value, then verify the average.

Mini example

Three scores average 8. Two scores are 6 and 9.

Reveal model answer

Total = 3 × 8 = 24; missing score = 24 − 15 = 9.

Watch for: Treating the stated average as the missing value.
