NSW Opportunity Class · 2027 Year 5 entry guide
Opportunity Class applications involve an early timeline, a three-part placement test and school choices that affect offers. This guide brings the verified NSW process together without presenting unofficial score estimates as facts.

Application timeline
The application and test stages below are complete. The next published milestone is the release of placement outcomes on 9 September 2026. Dates for 2028 entry have not yet been published.
Parents could select up to four opportunity classes.

Computer-based placement test
The current OC test is computer-based and entirely multiple-choice. The three sections are weighted equally, and students cannot use a calculator.

NSW Education provides free online computer-based practice tests. The department says coaching is not necessary and does not endorse coaching; for younger children, preparation should stay proportionate and wellbeing-aware.

The statewide figures show the scale of demand, not an individual child’s probability. The selected schools, preference order, applicant performance and available places all affect the result.
Score truth
There is no official fixed OC cut-off table and no universal pass mark. NSW Education does not release individual test scores, raw marks or placement ranks, so a performance band cannot be converted into a school entry score.

Most physical OC intakes offer 15 or 30 Year 5 places. Capacity helps families understand the setting, but it is not a school ranking or an offer forecast.

Preference order matters because a child receives only one initial offer. A practical comparison should include travel, the child’s view, class structure, school environment and the family’s genuine order of preference.
Consider travel time, before- and after-school arrangements and whether the child would need to change schools.
Use official practice resources to build familiarity without allowing test preparation to displace normal learning, rest and play.
An OC place does not create automatic entry to a selective high school; families must apply separately for Year 7.
Up to 20% of places at each OC may be held under the Equity Placement Model for specified under-represented groups. Academic merit still applies within the model.
For a 15-place OC intake, seven places are allocated to girls, seven to boys and one by academic merit regardless of gender.

The Opportunity Class Placement Test was held on 8 and 9 May 2026, with a make-up test on 22 May 2026. Outcomes are expected on 9 September 2026. Dates for 2028 entry have not yet been published.
NSW Education publishes 1,840 Year 5 places across 89 opportunity classes statewide.
There is no fixed official OC cut-off score or universal pass mark. Individual test scores and placement ranks are not released. The performance needed changes with applicant demand, relative test performance, available places and declined offers.
For each test component, the report shows whether the child was in the top 10%, next 15%, next 25% or lowest 50% of candidates. These are comparative cohort bands rather than percentages correct, raw scores, ranks or school cut-offs.
No. Reserve bands A to F use the previous year’s movement to estimate when an offer might occur. They are not an exact reserve-list position and cannot predict whether a later offer will arrive.
Applicants can list up to four opportunity classes in genuine preference order. A child receives only one initial offer, so the order should reflect the family’s real preferences.
