What is in the Selective High School Placement Test?
The current test is computer-based. Every section contributes 25% of the placement-test weighting, so a balanced preparation plan matters more than chasing one headline score.

NSW Education provides free online computer-based practice tests. The department says coaching is not necessary and does not endorse coaching; useful planning should focus on test familiarity, sustainable routines and the child’s wellbeing.

How competitive is Selective entry?
The numbers describe the scale of the process, not an individual child’s probability. School demand, preference order, applicant performance, equity settings and declined offers all affect placement.
Score truth
What score is needed for James Ruse, Baulkham Hills or another selective school?
There is no official fixed cut-off table. NSW Education does not release individual test scores or placement ranks, and the level needed for an offer changes each year.
- Performance reports show four comparative bands: top 10%, next 15%, next 25% and lowest 50% of candidates.
- A top-10% band does not mean 90% of questions were answered correctly; it describes performance relative to other candidates.
- The level needed at a school depends on demand, applicant performance, available places and declined offers.
- Third-party ‘cut-off’ numbers are unofficial estimates and should not be treated as an admissions requirement or a prediction.

What does top-band result rate mean?
Band 6 and E4 course results divided by all HSC subject completionsIt measures course results, not individual students. One student may contribute several top-band results. It is not the percentage of students who passed, received an ATAR above 90 or improved because of the school.
Limits of the comparison
Read rankings with care
Selective schools enrol high-potential and gifted students through competitive entry. Raw outcomes therefore reflect prior student selection as well as teaching, peers, subject mix, cohort size, family context and accelerated courses. This table is not a measure of teaching value-added, wellbeing, culture or fit for an individual student.
Source and revision note
The latest post-publication 2025 extract was updated on 1 May 2026 using NESA data and supplementary school publications. North Sydney Boys was revised from 663 to 664 top-band results after results day; its derived rank remains first. The 2023 and 2024 rates use the same published methodology.
Planning the preferences
School choices are a strategy decision, not a score ladder.
Families can list up to three schools in genuine preference order. Listing a school first does not give extra test consideration, but the order controls which offer is made when a student meets the level for more than one choice.
Fit before reputation
Compare travel time, school setting, subject opportunities, the student’s preferences and day-to-day sustainability.
Order choices honestly
The first preference should be the school the family genuinely wants most, not the school thought to be easiest or hardest.
Plan for every outcome
Understand offers, higher-choice reserve lists and the local-school alternative before results day.
Fair access
Up to 20% of places at each school may be held under the Equity Placement Model for specified under-represented groups. Academic merit still applies within the model.
Gender parity from 2027
Co-educational selective schools have set numbers of places for girls and boys from the 2027 intake. Check the current school list for the published split.

When was the NSW Selective test for 2027 entry?
The Selective High School Placement Test was held on 1 and 2 May 2026, with a make-up test on 22 May 2026. Outcomes are expected on 19 August 2026. Dates for 2028 entry have not yet been published.
How many Year 7 selective-school places are available?
The current NSW Department of Education list publishes 4,338 Year 7 places across selective high schools for 2027 entry.
What selective-school score does my child need?
There is no fixed official cut-off score. Individual test scores and placement ranks are not released. The performance needed changes with applicant demand, relative test performance, available places and declined offers.
How many selective schools can we choose?
